Sue Howells

Sue Howells Paintings

Sue Howells was born in Birmingham in 1948. She didn't begin painting until she was 34 years old and became inspired when she took a course in watercolour painting. It wasn't long before her work started to sell in local galleries and she was also selling work to interior designers and local businesses. By 1994 she was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

Sue has undertaken work for Harrods, John Lewis, television advertisements and several television programmes including Little Britain, EastEnders, My Family and The Vicar of Dibley. She is now the top selling female British artist and her work is sought by collectors around the world.

Sue Howells' work has many influences but she is principally inspired by nature and the landscapes and towns of Wales and Italy where she finds fascination in the effects of the changing light. She is excited by the many facets of watercolours and explores mood, movement, light and colour with strong brush strokes and vibrant hues.

She is best known for her landscapes and buildings and creates compositions where everything is just a little bit off kilter. Her unique perspectives combined with naïve yet dynamic figures in the foreground bring a great sense of movement to her work. Her creations inspire an overwhelming feeling that everything is in motion and so could not be easily captured in a static image. The compositions feel like they have been hastily rendered as the scene changes before the artist's eyes. Burring conveys the impression of what was as well as what is.

Sue Howells' unique, quirky and endearing work has instant appeal and we are delighted to showcase a fabulous collection of her signed limited edition prints at the Enid Hutt Gallery. These memorable contemporary pieces are avidly collected and we are sure that sue Howells' incredible popularity will endure.
