Early Years

Born in Bristol, Mary Fedden (1915-2012) wanted to be a painter from a very early age. She went on to study at only the age of 16 at Slade School of Fine Art from 1932 to 1936. Having studied there under respected Russian theatre designer Vladimir Polunin, she initially did some work of her own in theatre design before she then decided to go another direction. Returning from London to Bristol, she started to make a living painting portraits. Then, with the beginning of the Second World War, she went back to London to work on murals as part of the official war effort; she was in 1944 called up to work as a Navy driver.

Brilliant Artistic Career

With the war ended, Fedden was able to return to the easel, with her style developing in a modernist direction which carried with it echoes of figures such as Matisse and Braque. She had her first exhibition in 1947 and went on to become a prolific painter throughout her life. Mary Feeden's artwork is bold and vivid, often making use of simplistic yet striking shapes and colour combinations.
